Thomas Hope

|
(1769–1831) Collector whose fame now derives from the uncompromisingly 'antique' furniture which he himself designed for the houses in which he kept his collection of antiquities, and which he published in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807). His designs include chairs copied from Greek vases as well as painted Egyptian pieces, part of the revival of interest in ancient *Egypt which had begun with *Napoleon's campaign there in 1798–9.
