Family of botanists much involved with the *botanic gardens of the 19C. William Hooker (1785–1865, kt 1836) was professor of botany at Glasgow from 1820 and in 1841 became the first director of *Kew Gardens. He was succeeded in that post in 1865 by his son Joseph Hooker (1817–1911, kt 1877), who in his early years had been a highly adventurous traveller in search of plants. He went with *Ross to the Antarctic in 1839–43 and spent 1847–51 in north India and the Himalayas. These expeditions resulted in several major works of botanical taxonomy.
