Holloway
|
|
(London N7) The country's main prison for women, completed in 1852 in the style of a Gothic castle. Mrs Pankhurst and other *suffragettes were imprisoned here. In the 1970s it was entirely rebuilt, with the blocks surrounding an open space on the principle of a village green. Holloway was the first women's prison in Britain to have accommodation for mothers and babies, but the conditions in which they lived were severely criticized in 1992 by the Chief Inspector of Prisons.
