(1745–1806) Architect who worked in a neoclassical style more restrained than that of Robert *Adam, who was one generation older. In 1771 he became the partner of Capability *Brown, and in 1773 married his daughter. He did much work, no longer visible, for the Prince Regent; his Marine Pavilion at Brighton (1787) was absorbed within Nash's *Royal Pavilion, and *Carlton House was demolished in 1827. But *Brooks's Club and *Albany survive in central London, and he contributed greatly to *Althorp, *Broadlands and *Woburn.
