(1882–1963, kt 1953) England's greatest prewar batsman. Born the son of the groundsman at Jesus College, Cambridge, and known from his effortless style as 'the Master', he played *cricket for Surrey (1905–34) and for England (1907–30) His highest score was a famous 316 not out for Surrey against Middlesex in 1926. His aggregate of 61,237 runs in *first-class cricket, and his 197 centuries (98 of them after he was 40) still stand as records by a wide margin.
