Nicholas Hilliard
|
|
(1547–1619) The first great English painter of portrait *miniatures, a form which had been introduced by artists from the Continent and brought to a high state of perfection by *Holbein. The son of an Exeter goldsmith, Hilliard was appointed court miniaturist by Elizabeth I in about 1570. More than 200 of his miniatures of leading Elizabethan figures survive, the best collection being in the *Victoria and Albert Museum. He wrote a treatise on his craft, The Art of Limning (not published until 1912), in which he named Holbein as his inspiration.
