Highland dress

|
The full costume worn in the past by clansmen in the *Highlands of Scotland, surviving now in the uniform of certain regiments and as the Scottish equivalent of male *evening dress. The distinctive elements are the kilt (a knee-length pleated *tartan skirt, wrapped around and fixed at the waist), the sporran (a pouch, usually covered in fur, which is suspended from the waist to hang in front of the kilt) and the sgian-dhu or skean-dhu(literally 'black knife' but in practice a more ornamental dagger) tucked into the top of a knee-length stocking. The full outfit, worn as a uniform, includes the plaid (a long piece of tartan cloth worn over the shoulder) and a bonnet.
