(1890–1965, DBE 1941) Pianist who made her London debut at the age of 17 playing Beethoven's fourth concerto, with Beecham as conductor. She organized the famous lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery during World War II, and was herself one of the regular performers. Her piano transcription of a Bach chorale, Jesu, joy of man's desiring, became immensely popular.
