(48km/30m NE of Carlisle) Ruggedly four-square tower house in the Borders region of Scotland. Begun in the 14C, it became the stronghold of *Bothwell (lover and later husband of *Mary Queen of Scots), but was a ruin by the 18C. With its exterior walls now well restored, it is a powerful sight in its rolling Cheviot countryside. Brother William, a monk from Kelso Abbey, established the nearby hermitage in the 12C and so gave the area its name.
