A.P. Herbert
|
|
(Alan Patrick Herbert, 1890–1971, kt 1945) Author, wit and crusader. He first reached a wide public as a regular contributor to Punch, where his 'Misleading Cases' (published as a book in 1927) ridiculed certain aspects of court procedure. His crusading zeal was seen in his years as an MP for Oxford university (1935–50), particularly in his successful campaign for reform of the *divorce laws. He lived on the bank of the Thames at Hammersmith, and river life was another of his abiding interests – as seen in his most successful novel, The Water Gipsies (1930).
