herbaceous border
|
|
Long flower bed, usually with a background of a wall or hedge, planted with flowers which die down in the winter and which are carefully grouped for displays of colour. Such borders have been favourites in England since the 19C, particularly in country houses and university colleges. As early as 1822 John *Loudon devoted a chapter of one of his books to 'herbaceous border-flowers'.
