Henry V
(1387–1422) King of England from 1413; eldest son of Henry IV and Mary de Bohun; married *Catherine of France (1420).
More than any other English monarch he has come to symbolize the patriot and warrior, thanks to Shakespeare's play *Henry V. His reign was largely devoted to capturing territory in northern France, during the *Hundred Years' War. His first autumn of campaigning in 1415 brought the victory of *Agincourt, and by 1420 he was able to force the French to accept him, in the treaty of Troyes, as bridegroom to the king's daughter, Catherine, and as heir to the French throne. Henry's death just two years later, from fever in his camp, left his ambitious plans in ruins and an 8-month-old baby, *Henry VI, on the throne of England (see the *royal house).
