(1909–86, kt 1968) Australian-born dancer, choreographer and actor who joined the Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler's Wells in 1933 and remained with the company until 1950. During that time he was a frequent partner of Margot Fonteyn, as well as choreographing several ballets in which he danced the leading male role, including Hamlet (1942) and Miracle in the Gorbals (1944); he also choreographed the ballet extracts in the film The Red Shoes (1948). During the 1950s he concentrated on acting, playing many of the leading Shakespearean roles at Stratford and at the Old Vic in London. In 1965 he returned to Australia to become director of the Australian Ballet.
