|
(1818) Novel by Sir Walter *Scott, set in Edinburgh. The title is the popular name of the prison (the Old Tolbooth in *Parliament Square) in which the innocent Effie Deans awaits trial for murdering her child. She is pardoned after her half-sister, Jeanie, walks to London and pleads in person with Queen Caroline. The story centres on a historical event, the Porteous riot, which led to the storming of the prison in 1736.
