The Hay Wain
|
|
(1821, National Gallery) The best-known of *Constable's paintings, typical of his subject matter and method. It shows the river Stour in Suffolk, seen from Flatford Mill with Willy Lot's cottage on the left. The unforced composition, with the hay cart and its draft horses blending unobtrusively into the colours of the river and woodland, is in keeping with the impression that this is an actual English summer day which has been observed and captured.
