Mike Hawthorn
|
|
(1929–58) Racing driver who sprang to fame, driving a Ferrari, when he beat Fangio by a few feet to win the 1953 French Grand Prix. He remained one of the great man's chief rivals in subsequent years (Fangio won the world championship every year from 1954 to 1957) and succeeded him as champion in 1958 after Fangio's retirement. At the end of that year Hawthorn was killed in a road accident.
