(c.1320–94) English soldier of fortune who served Edward III in the early campaigns of the *Hundred Years' War and then was the leading mercenary (or *condottiere) of his day in Italy. From 1378 to 1392 he commanded Florence's army, becoming a Florentine citizen in 1391. His image on horseback, painted in 1436 by Paolo *Uccello, is one of the most striking features of the interior of the cathedral in *Florence. Contemporary documents refer to him as a knight, but it is not known when or where he was knighted.
