Nicholas Hawksmoor
|
|
(1661–1736) Baroque architect who had a hand in virtually every important English building in the decades around 1700 – first as *Wren's assistant (on *Chelsea Hospital, *Greenwich Hospital, *St Paul's Cathedral) and then as *Vanbrugh's (*Castle Howard, *Blenheim Palace). Since Vanbrugh had no architectural training, Hawksmoor's contribution to his buildings must have been large. His own work includes a superb mansion in Northamptonshire (Easton Neston, begun c.1702), the mausoleum at Castle Howard, the west towers of *Westminster Abbey and, above all, half a dozen churches in London.
