Norman Hartnell

(1901–79, KCVO 1977) Fashion designer who was dressmaker to two successive queens – the present Queen Mother and her daughter, Elizabeth II. He made Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress in 1947 and also the dress for her coronation in 1953. The firm of Hartnell continued after his death; in 1990 Marc Bohan, previously in charge of Christian Dior in Paris, was appointed the design director.
