'Bomber' Harris
|
|
(Arthur Harris, 1892–1984, KCB 1942, bt 1953) Airman in charge from 1942 of the RAF's Bomber Command. Originally formed in 1936, this was built up by Harris into the formidable fighting machine which blasted German military and civilian targets from 1943. He has been criticized in recent decades for the enthusiasm with which he continued 'area bombing' (particularly of Dresden in 1945), after more precise night-time targeting had become possible. The placing of a statue of him in front of *St Clement Danes caused controversy in 1992.
