The foppish young lover of Columbine in 18C *pantomime, who went about his courtship dressed in a tightly fitting suit made of bright silk diamonds. Although he borrowed his name from Arlecchino, a quick-witted servant in the Italian *commedia dell'arte, he was exclusively a part of English stage tradition. During the 19C he was gradually crowded out of pantomime by the principal boy and the dame.
