hare and hounds
|
|
A cross-country sport popular in *public schools from the early 19C, in which a couple of runners (the hares) are given a head start on their pursuers (the hounds). It is also called a paper-chase, since the hares usually scatter fragments of paper as the equivalent of the scent, enabling the hounds to track them. Many British athletic clubs, with their origins in this sport, still call themselves Harriers – the word for dogs trained to hunt hares.
