Gilbert Harding
|
|
(1907–60) The first man in Britain to acquire the status of a television 'personality'. He became well known on radio, chairing Round Britain Quiz and Twenty Questions, but it was as a panellist on the TV game What's My Line? that he really appealed to the public – largely because of his grumpy character, which the audience hoped (often with good reason) might lead him into downright rudeness. One of the most widely remembered moments from the early years of British TV was Harding's breaking down on Face to Face, when a question about his mother unexpectedly touched a raw nerve.
