Tony Hancock
|
|
(1924–68) Comedian whose Hancock's Half Hour (BBC radio from 1954, TV from 1956) focused on the semi-autobiographical hang-ups of a fictional Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock, resident at 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam. The character's blend of paranoia and aggression proved irresistible in brief classics such as The Blood Donor. But there were similar problems in Hancock's own life, leading to his eventual suicide.
