John Hampden
|
|
(1594–1643) Parliamentarian who led the opposition to *Charles I over *ship money, refusing the payment due from him in 1636 on his estates in Buckinghamshire. One specific levy (20 shillings on Stoke Mandeville) was heard as a test case before 12 judges, who decided narrowly for the king. The effect was to cause many others to withhold payment. Hampden was prominent in the Long Parliament, and was one of the *Five Members. He died of musket wounds after a skirmish with Prince Rupert's cavalry near Oxford during the *English Civil War.
