(1903–65) The greatest English batsman and all-rounder in the years between the wars, playing *cricket for Gloucestershire (1920–51) and for England (1927–47, captain 1938–47). His 905 runs in a *Test series (Australia, 1928–9) is still (in 1992) a record for England, as are his 22 Test centuries (a record shared with Cowdrey and Boycott).
