Haldane

Scottish family prominent for two generations in public life and in science. Richard Burdon Haldane (1856–1928, viscount 1911) was a barrister and Liberal MP for East Lothian (from 1885). His greatest contribution was as secretary of state for war in 1905–12, when he set up an easily mobilized expeditionary force and founded the *territorial army – developments of great importance in the coming war. His sister Elizabeth Sanderson Haldane (1862–1937) was also much involved in public life, mainly on welfare issues, and was the first woman JP in Scotland.

Their brother John Scott Haldane (1860–1936) was a physiologist whose researches into the chemical aspects of breathing were of great importance in the mining industry. The latter's son J.B.S. Haldane (John Burdon Sanderson, 1892–1964) was a geneticist of distinction, specializing in heredity and the evolution of entire populations. He was a promiment Marxist in the 1930s and was chairman (1940–50) of the editorial board of the Daily Worker.
