Haddon Hall
|
|
(26km/16m SW of Sheffield) Stone medieval house which grew up from the 12C round an upper and lower courtyard and which gives a powerfully coherent impression of baronial life, with a 14C banqueting hall and a chapel with 15C murals. The Long Gallery was given its present form in the early 17C. By 1700 the Manners family had abandoned the house – just before the two 'improving' centuries. Haddon was therefore unspoilt when the 9th duke of Rutland began restoring it in the early 20C.
