Humphrey Gilbert
|
|
(c.1539–83, kt 1570) English soldier and colonizer who claimed St John's, Newfoundland, for Elizabeth I in 1583. But the colonists he had taken with him decided almost immediately against staying. On the return voyage Gilbert went down in a storm with the tiny 10-ton Squirrel) in which he had, eccentrically, insisted on travelling.
