(66,000 in 1991) Cathedral town on the river Wey, historically the county town of Surrey but not in recent times the administrative centre. It has been a diocese since 1927. The redbrick cathedral, on a hilltop site to the northwest of the town, was designed by Edward Maufe (1883–1974) and was consecrated in 1961. The 12C keep survives of the Norman castle, and the town's steep High Street (famous for the clock projecting from the 17C Guildhall) contains several distinguished buildings – in particular the early 17C almshouse, Abbot's Hospital. The Royal Grammar School, founded in 1552 and now an independent school, still has its 16C library of 89 chained books.
