(1915–92, kt 1973) Conductor who was a familiar part of British musical life for several decades as the musical director or conductor of a succession of regional orchestras – the BBC Northern Orchestra (1944–51), the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (1951–61), the Welsh National Opera (1961–3) and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (1963–77).
