Grove
|
|
The shortened name commonly used for the Dictionary of Music and Musicians, compiled originally by George Grove (1820–1900) and published by Macmillan in four volumes (1879–89). An engineer by trade, Grove was led by his love of music to write the programme notes for concerts at the *Crystal Palace for 40 years, and he became in 1883 the first director of the Royal College of Music. His dictionary has been regularly expanded and updated.
