Grimsby
|
|
(92,000 in 1991) England's main fishing port, in Humberside, on the south shore of the Humber estuary. There was an important settlement of *Danes here in the 9C, and the name is believed to derive from Grim, a fisherman in Danish legend. In recent years the town has suffered from the *cod wars and from restrictions on fishing. The waterfront is dominated by the great Dock Tower, an 1852 replica of the tower of the Palazzo Publico in *Siena.
