(b. 1913, baron 1983) Author and Liberal politician, MP for Orkney and Shetland 1950–83. He was leader of the Liberal party from 1956 to 1967 and saw the party's votes rise from about 700,000 in 1955 to more than 3 million in 1964. But this increase added only three parliamentary seats, bringing the figure up from six to nine (see the *two-party system). His first two books outlined his vision for the party – The Liberal Future (1959) and The Liberal Challenge (1963). He was succeeded as leader in 1967 by Jeremy Thorpe.
