Joseph Grimaldi

(1778–1837)
Regarded as the classic English clown, he is credited with introducing the traditional white-faced make-up. For most of his career he was the resident clown at the *Sadler's Wells theatre. It was in memory of him that a 'joey' became a general name for a clown.
