Greenwich Mean Time
|
|
The time as calculated by the movement of the sun in relation to the *Greenwich meridian. It is the local time in the British Isles, except when *Summer Time applies, and it is used internationally to define relative time zones; thus Tokyo is said to be nine hours ahead of GMT and New York five hours behind. Until 31 December 1924 a time given as 0001 GMT was one minute after noon, but GMT then changed to the now familiar 24-hour system starting at midnight.
