Greenwich

(London SE10) Historic area on the south bank of the Thames downstream from London. There was a royal palace here from the 15C, when Greenwich Park was enclosed. *Henry VIII, *Mary I and *Elizabeth I were born in the palace, which survived till the 17C; it was used as a biscuit factory during the Commonwealth. Greenwich contains Britain's earliest classical building, the *Queen's House; the *Royal Observatory and the *Royal Naval College (on the site of the old palace) date from the late 17C. The district has retained strong links with the sea in the *National Maritime Museum. Also on display are the *Cutty Sark and Francis *Chichester's Gipsy Moth. The region acquired a high and controversial profile at the turn of the century as the site of the Millennium Dome (designed by Richard Rogers).
