green belt
|
|
A strip of countryside, around a town or city, in which development is restricted. The concept of towns being closely surrounded by agricultural land was part of the *garden city movement, but the phrase derives from the 1930s when specific areas round London and other cities were designated as green belt. Encroachment on these areas has been a controversial issue ever since.
