The name popularly given to the appalling stench rising from the Thames during the summer of 1858, caused by hot weather and the quantity of sewage discharged by a new but ill-advised system of sewers. Conditions became so unpleasant in the riverside *Houses of Parliament that swift political action ensued, resulting in *Bazalgette's improvements to London's sanitation.
