Mons Graupius
|
|
(Latin for Mount Graupius) Battle in AD 83, in which the *Romans under *Agricola defeated the Scottish tribes; they thus established, albeit briefly, the furthest point north of Roman power. The battle is described by the historian *Tacitus (who had married Agricola's daughter), but his Mons Graupius has never been identified. It is known to have been north of the Firth of Tay, and the hills inland from Stonehaven (south of Aberdeen) are a possibility. The name of the *Grampians is the result of a misreading of Graupius, the site of the battle being shown on a map of 1527 as Mons Grampius.
