Percy Grainger
|
|
(1882–1961) Australian-born composer who lived most of his life in the USA, but whose years in Britain before World War I resulted in several pieces with a strongly local flavour – in particular Country Gardens (1919, based on the folk tune to which The Vicar of *Bray is sung) and Handel in the Strand (1930, variations on Handel's tune The Harmonious Blacksmith). He collected English folk music, and it was he who brought 'Brigg Fair' to the notice of *Delius.
