(1859–1932) Scottish author of one of Britain's most lasting classics for children, The *Wind in the Willows. He had previously published two very successful books of stories about childhood (The Golden Age 1895, Dream Days 1898). His professional career was in the Bank of England, where he rose from being a clerk in 1879 to Secretary of the Bank in 1898.
