Edward Gibbon
|
|
(1737–94) English historian, author of The *Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Apart from a spell as a notably inactive MP (1774–82), his life's work was his great history. He was the recipient of a remark often quoted as an extreme example of English philistinism. He gave the second volume of Decline and Fall to the duke of Gloucester, younger brother of George III, only to receive the response, 'Another damned, thick, square book! Always scribble, scribble, scribble! Eh! Mr Gibbon?'.
