Gowrie conspiracy
|
|
(1600) An event mysterious in its own time and still unexplained. After a day's hunting James VI (later *James I and VI) visited the house in Perth of the earl of Gowrie (c.1577–1600). He was unexpected but was accompanied by Gowrie's younger brother. In a scuffle later that night Gowrie and his brother were killed. The official version was that they were conspiring to seize the king; others have maintained that it was part of a complex royal plot to murder Gowrie.
