Distinguished group of British musicians in the late 19C and 20C. Eugene Goossens (1845–1906) was a Belgian conductor who lived in England from 1873, conducting the *Carl Rosa Opera (1882–92). His son and grandson were both Eugene (1867–1958, 1893–1962) and both conductors; the son became in his turn principal conductor of the Carl Rosa (1899–1915); the grandson was also a violinist and composer. Another grandson, Leon (1897–1988) was a virtuoso oboist, for whom *Elgar and *Vaughan Williams wrote pieces; and two granddaughters (Marie 1894–1991, Sidonie b. 1899) became distinguished harpists.
