Goodwin Sands
|
|
Dangerous strip of shifting sandbanks, exposed at low tide and lying about 10km/6m off the eastern tip of Kent. The deeper water between them and the coast, known as the Downs, has been an important anchorage. Legend describes the sands as the remains of an island, Lomea, which supposedly belonged to *Godwin, the father of *Harold II.
