Member of the *Commonwealth since 1957 and a republic since 1960. From as early as the 15C trading fortresses were built by the Portuguese in this part of west Africa, known to Europeans as the Gold Coast. By the 17C slaves were an even more valuable export than gold, and the Netherlands, Denmark and Britain were all involved in the area. The territories making up modern Ghana gradually came under British control from about 1850. Kwame *Nkrumah (1909–72) was elected in 1952 as the first prime minister of the colony of the Gold Coast. He continued to lead Ghana from independence in 1957 until he was ousted in a coup in 1966.
