The Go-Between
|
|
(1953) Novel by L.P. Hartley (1895–1972) about a 12-year-old boy, Leo, on holiday in a country house during an idyllic Edwardian summer. He carries secret messages to and fro between two lovers, the daughter of the house and a tenant farmer, becoming increasingly disturbed by the passion of which he is the bewildered channel. The film of 1970 was an immaculate and nostalgic recreation of that lost world; directed by Joseph Losey, it had a script by Harold Pinter and starred Alan Bates and Julie Christie.
