gnomes of Zurich
|
|
A phrase for the international banking community, coined by Harold *Wilson in a speech to the House of Commons in 1956 ('all the little gnomes of Zurich and the other financial centres'). It was revived when his Labour government faced a balance of payments crisis on coming to power in 1964.
