Garrick Club
|
|
(London WC2) A *club named in honour of David *Garrick, founded in 1831 as a place where 'actors and men of refinement' might meet on equal terms and where 'easy intercourse' could be promoted between artists and patrons. It moved in 1864 to the present building, designed by Frederick Marrable (1818–72); its walls are lined with the club's famous collection of theatrical portraits. The membership is drawn largely from theatre and television, literature and journalism, publishing and the law – a catchment area suggesting enlightenment. Nevertheless, on an issue which generated wide outside interest, the club voted heavily in 1992 against admitting women as members.
